the newest obsession – barbies. i have… hundreds in the closet in the guest bedroom. all boxed up, because my mom is awesome. and caylin has discovered them. there’s a giant tupperware box of probably 20 of them that we took down for her to play with (not getting them ALL out, no way). they’re in the same room as the polly pocket collection that she also found. so she is less enthused this month with polly pockets as she is with barbie. i am kind of sad that she actually says “barbie” now instead of “gobie”. gobie was so cute.

mom and brett and caylin and i went to merlefest last weekend. i should have known better than to make this a big family thing, since toting a 2 year old to something like this is just… not an easy task. caylin does far better 1 on 1 than she does with all 3 of us. new sleeping arrangements, lack of sleep, overstimulated. long story short, i paid $150 for caylin to play in the sand for 3 hours.

we got to seven devils late thursday night, and caylin didn’t go to sleep til like midnight. friday she was just NOT having it. so many tantrums and crying. almost didn’t go to merlefest, but i’m glad we did. as soon as we told her we were taking a bus from parking to merlefest, that’s all she could talk about. and that was the only bargaining chip we had when she’d start to throw a fit.

weather was amazing. great background music, since we didn’t actually get to watch any sets. mom and i walked around for most of it and shopped and ate a funnel cake, which, that alone is worth $150. the people watching, the smell, the mountains. brett sat with caylin while she painted and played with sand. it turned out to be a great afternoon.

though, i will say, other people’s kids can be RUDE. one kid threw sand in caylin’s face. another grabbed her arm and shoved her away. another little girl who was probably 6 or 7 at least started mouthing off to her. i know they have to learn things on their own, but, let me tell you… it is HARD to sit there and watch other kids be assholes and not intervene. SO HARD.

caylin got to ride the bus twice (highlight of her month, for real), mom got her funnel cake, brett got whiskey, neeses’s sausage, and a forensic files marathon, and i got my black bean queso dip from macado’s and a new cowboy hat. all was well in the world.

we drove back home saturday, and brett dropped us off. he drove to the liquor store before it closed at 7, and got in a wreck. miraculously, no one was really injured, just achy. both cars are most likely totaled, so that’s fun. bottom line, no one hurt, really don’t care about anything else. sucks, but could have been so much worse.

this has definitely been a trying month as far as discipline goes. she is very defiant. strong-willed. stubborn. likes to NOT listen. there has been a lot of yelling and explaining and butt smacks and taking-the-ipad-away. nothing has really worked so far, aside from letting her just sit there and scream and cry and pout until she’s done. and then we change the subject. we don’t know what else to do at this point. it’s frustrating, and usually has to do with her messing with loki.

mom took caylin to NC on tuesday morning to see my uncle who just had surgery, and is bringing her back in a few hours. i was excited to be able to work from home today and have the house to myself for the first time in ages. but, not surprisingly, the only thing i want is for them to come back so i can see her little face.

it’s been a weird 3 days with her gone. we were so excited to have freedom–we weren’t sure what to do with ourselves. we went on an awesome dinner date last night to oscar’s in summerville. had pizza and drank whiskey the night before. stayed up watching forensic files and house of cards and american sniper at like movie-theater-volume. enjoyed the ability to use the ice maker after 9pm.

it was awesome quality time, but it just doesn’t feel right without her here :)

this weekend, brett asked me to marry him, and it was everything and nothing like i imagined it would be.

mostly because it was completely unexpected. we’ve talked about it on more than one occasion, and i’ve always told him the same thing–whenever you’re ready. no rush. don’t do anything you don’t want to do. it will happen when it feels right.

and i always figured i would know that it was coming or that it would be like in the movies where it’s all rehearsed-sounding and, i don’t know, hoakey. that’s just how engagements come off in my mind, i guess.

and it wasn’t. it was perfect. it was so freaking perfect. i had no idea. it was simple, beautiful, not over the top, not cheesy–PERFECT.

we went to boone for the weekend to stay at his parents’ cabin. it had been since october since we’d been up there, so it was definitely deserved. we both missed it.

we had planned on going to macado’s and getting our usual–pitcher of beer & basket of fries. we had planned on going to hebron rock colony, but the weather didn’t really allow for that. we had planned on just relaxing at the cabin in front of the TV with the fireplace going. we also planned on going up to howard’s knob, a place i rarely went in college, mostly because of the drive up the mountain. brett hadn’t been in years, and neither had i. i was excited.

so we went up friday afternoon after dropping our stuff off at the cabin. originally, brett wanted to go at night. but the weather channel was calling for rain, and it was a little colder than we expected. he was hell bent on getting up that damn mountain, and now it makes sense. before, i just couldn’t believe how freaking excited he was to go to howard’s knob. crazy.

anyway, we got up there and i had forgotten the park was closed until may. completely forgot they did the whole seasonal thing. so we snuck in under the fence. crisis averted. it made it more fun either way. we got up to the cliff and sat down on a big ol’ rock, and just stared. i’m like a little kid in a candy store when i’m in the mountains. it is just pure bliss for me. so staring at it from a cliff just about gives me a heart attack every time. brett knows this all too well. :)

[![the view from howard's knob :) boone, nc](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12242-300x225.jpg "the view from howard's knob :) boone, nc")](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12242.jpg)
we sat for a few minutes, and brett asked me if i wanted to be with him forever. which is something i’ve heard many more times than once, and like always, i said yes.

but then he said, “good, because i brought you up here for a reason”.

and then i think my heart stopped beating. but i could feel his next to me going a mile a minute so at least one of us would make it out alive.

while he was squatted next to me, he pulled a silver band with the biggest rock i’ve ever seen on it out of his pocket, and he asked me to marry him.

simple band, beautiful setting, and one absolutely gorgeous diamond sitting on top.

[![the ring :)](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12248-300x225.jpg "the ring :)")](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12248.jpg) [![the ring :)](/content/images/2011/03/265214432-300x179.jpg "the ring :)")](/content/images/2011/03/265214432.jpg)
then i think i flat-lined, came back to life, and said YES. lord, yes. good god almighty, yes. simplest decision of my entire life.

and then i cried.

and we said i love you like 7 times.

and then he told me that he had called my dad that morning to ask for his blessing.

and the flood gates opened.

and then i think i died again.

we headed down the mountain, called our families to tell them the news, and made it facebook official.

we went to macado’s for beer and fries and played some clint black on the jukebox.

we went on a very happy, slightly drunk shopping spree down king street.

we went back to the cabin to get nice clothes for our dinner reservations at the gamekeeper. best and most expensive dinner i’ve ever had. we were so happy that we didn’t really even think about the bill at the end.

[![the gamekeeper](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12254-300x225.jpg "the gamekeeper")](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12254.jpg) [![TO DIE FOR cheesecake](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12262-300x225.jpg "TO DIE FOR cheesecake")](/content/images/2011/03/SDC12262.jpg)
i don’t even know what more to say because it was just perfect.

i am so in love with this man.

HUGE BUMMER. i’d really like to play with the hyenas.

anyway, this cabin is, HANDS DOWN, one of my favorite places on earth. brett’s parents own it and rent it out online. i will provide the link to it (with their permission, of course) AFTER this weekend. when we’re already back in south carolina. for obvious reasons.

![Cabin](/content/images/2010/03/129e7a.jpg "Cabin")![Cabin](/content/images/2010/03/129543.jpg "Cabin")
i love it because it’s in the mountains. that is where i belong. in the mountains. why? let me show you.

![The High Country](/content/images/2010/03/mountains.jpg "The High Country")this is why.

![The High Country](/content/images/2010/03/mountains2.jpg "The High Country")THIS is why.

![The High Country](/content/images/2010/03/mountains4.jpg "The High Country")i even miss this. somehow, by the grace of god, charleston got snow this winter, but nothing close to this.

when i get sick of doing information security, which will hopefully be a long way off, i want to retreat back to the mountains. i want to live in a cabin. with blankets, hot chocolate, loki, thor, steak, an abundance of sweatpants, my handsome best friend, and a mountain of coors light. and my laptop, assuming web development is even necessary in 40 years. and assuming we even have laptops in 40 years. i really don’t even want to think about what earth will be like in 40 years.

i’m getting way off topic and i’m almost scaring myself, so i just want to say… i’m super excited about this weekend. we’re bringing food and beer with us so we don’t have to spend much money while we’re up there. he drives an escalade, which isn’t exactly wallet-friendly. the only other thing i will be willing to spend money on is macado’s, which is ALWAYS acceptable. always.

all photos (except the cabin pictures) are by my friend, leander. you can find more of his photography here. hi, leander!
